Behavioral History

Randall spent the first nine months of his life at a veterinarian’s house. The veterinarian socialized Randall at his vet clinic with other animals and people. Randall then spent the next three years with a man who purchased the dog from the veterinarian. The dog lived primarily in a kennel situation. This man had a woman train the dog for hunting. After a year and a half, the owner had a heart attack so for the next year and a half Randall was alone in a kennel. Randall then spent another nine months within another hunting-dog kennel. The current owners picked up Randall from this kennel and took him to their home. They have had him for five years.

Randall was purchased to be used primarily as a hunting dog. He has been trained by two different trainers. Mr. Smith claims that neither trainer used harsh or cruel methods to train their dogs, but the dog is conditioned to an electronic shock collar. During hunting trips, Randall has not shown aggressive behavior to either Mr. Smith or his hunting companions. However, when he is kenneled at night in the hotel room, he will growl at Mr. Smith’s hunting companions. Randall will also start to growl and bark if he is in his kennel in the back of the truck and anyone other than Mr. Smith starts to approach him.

Randall spends the majority of his time in an outdoor 15’ x 35’ run. The area is well shaded and he has access to fresh water. He is given Nylabones™ to play with during the day. When supervised, he is allowed to run free on the ¾-acre lot. Outside of his run, Randall seeks attention from everyone and will allow people in the yard to pet him. He is often walked down the neighborhood street and is usually greeted by several of the neighborhood children. Randall is normally very friendly and allows the children to pet him.

Randall’s aggression is manifested primarily in confined areas such as his crates and the kennel run in the yard. When loose in the yard, he will growl and snarl at people who look over the fence, including Mrs. Smith. He also growls if Mrs. Smith puts her face too close to his, hugs him, or leans over him. There was one incident when the dog was allowed to “hang out” with the family all day in the yard.
